What is a Giclée Print?
Giclee printing is an exceptionally high resolution archival printing technique and regarded as the apex of fine art reproduction methods currently. So impressive in fact, that it's the technique of choice for present day bank-note forgers. Giclee printing has rapidly become the standard choice amongst museums and art galleries as the preferred process for reproducing artwork whilst retaining optimum standards of quality. Both the longevity and colour fastness of Giclee prints far exceed prints produced using traditional metods.
Below are two magnified areas (highlighted in the image to the left by the red square) from a giclee print (bottom left) and a traditional photo-litho print (bottom right) of Eoghan Carbery's painting "New Years Resolution" for comparison.
The Giclee print, even highly magnified the image is in sharp focus and you can still see detail such as brush strokes and paint texture.
The traditional print, up close the dots that make up the image are visible. Resolution is poor in comparison.
